In Action
ITOPF promotes effective response to marine spills of oil, chemicals and other hazardous substances. We are funded by the world's shipowners and their insurers and operate on a not-for-profit basis.
ITOPF's technical staff have responded on-site to 800 shipping incidents in 100 countries. We provide scientific and objective advice on clean-up measures, environmental and economic effects, and compensation.
These incidents involve crude oil from tankers and bunker fuel, chemicals and bulk cargoes from all types of ship. On occasion, we also give advice on oil spills from other potential sources of marine pollution, eg pipelines and offshore installations.
In addition to responding to spills, ITOPF also provides advice on physical damage to sensitive habitats, such as coral reefs, resulting from ship groundings.
