Response Arrangements
The Maldives Coast Guard, part of the National Defence Force, is responsible for responding to maritime distress calls. The National Defence Force can establish a National Disaster Committee on the instruction of the President. The Maldives has a contingency plan to respond to national disasters and the oil spill response aspects are being developed, including sensitivity mapping, dispersant policy, GIS, equipment requirements etc. (Information from SACEP meeting, November 2015).
The major port under the control government-owned Maldives Port Limited is responsible for prevention of pollution within the harbour area. However, the port does not have equipment or an oil spill contingency plan to respond to oil spills and would notify the Coast Guard.

Limited resources are available in the country. They would only be sufficient to respond to small spills.

The Maldives has not experienced any major spills.

Regional & Bilateral Agreements
The South Asia Seas Programme is a cooperative partnership, formally adopted in 1995, for the protection
and management of the shared marine waters and associated coastal ecosystems of five maritime SACEP countries - Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
MoU for the Co-operation on the Response to Oil and Chemical Pollution in the South Asia Seas Region (signed by Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh & Maldives to date)
The Maldives is currently working on a tri-lateral security agreement with India and Sri Lanka aimed at strengthening the current contingency plan (Information from SACEP Meeting Nov 15)
