Technical Adviser, Dr. Amy Jewell attended the 45th AMOP Technical Seminar on Environmental Contamination and Response in Alberta, Canada.
While there, Amy delivered a presentation highlighting recent cases studies involving releases of low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) into the marine environment. This topic was the focus of many speakers, specifically the variability in behaviour between oils and the importance of pour point in determining oil behaviour.
Alongside Amy’s presentation, the winners of our 2021 Research and Development Award from the Huntsman Marine Science Centre delivered a presentation on their project on the photomodification of LSFOs, in which special attention is being given to how new LFSOs may impact commercially important marine species. While the study is still ongoing, they have found the toxicity increased in nine out of 14 oils tested following photomodification.
