ITOPF attends pollution response claims and compensation workshop in Malaysia
4 June 2024
ITOPF spent a week in Malaysia carrying out a pollution response claims and compensation workshop alongside the IOPC Funds, International Group of P&I Clubs for the Department of Environment (DOE), Malaysia Marine Department (MMD) and many other national agencies identified in the national contingency plan for a pollution incident in the country.
Tim Wadsworth, ITOPF’s Technical Support Manager and David Campion, Senior Technical Adviser represented ITOPF and gave a practical outline on the reasonableness of claims and submissions for clean-up activities during an incident. The pair also provided an overview the role of experts during a response and how and when to conduct environmental assessments, including the best practices ITOPF has observed and been involved in across it's experience responding to marine pollution events.
David and Tim also ran several table-top exercises for delegates, emulating various aspects of an oil pollution spill and engaging the delegates to think about managing a response.
The wider group delved into the processes involved in compiling and submitting claims for tourism and fisheries, and the rational for imposing and lifting potential fishing bans during a pollution incident. It was a huge success and ITOPF is very grateful to the Malaysian MOE for organising such a constructive week.
