While making the most technically and scientifically sound decisions during a pollution incident response is vital, preparedness before a spill happens is often one of the key factors in determining an effective response.

Oil spill response readiness and preparedness in the Baltic Sea and Finland was the first topic of conversation during the MARISEC 2025 Seminar in Kotka, Finland, where ITOPF joined to engage in these discussions.

Andrew Le Masurier, Senior Technical Adviser for ITOPF, led a presentation on responding to alternative fuels and the challenges these spills present in comparison to spills of traditional fuel oil. He spoke on the potential damage and liabilities arising from multiple types of fuel, which ITOPF has collated in a series of guides here: https://lnkd.in/gFtJqgwm

The conference went on to give hands-on demonstrations and live simulations of response equipment and generated in-depth expert discussions with the regional maritime professionals present. This MARISEC seminar was a key event in reinforcing the regional readiness to respond to pollution incidents in the Baltic Sea and Finland, ITOPF is grateful to share its expertise and network with those in attendance.
